Adult Advanced Swim
This class is for adults age 18+ who have experience with the water. Lessons will focus on swimming skills for fitness or competition, flip turns and more as determined by the participant request. Class sizes kept small for personal focus and practice. -
Adult Beginner Swim
This class is for adults age 18+ who have little experience with the water. Lessons will focus on safety and swim basics such as entering/exiting pool, floating, treading water, and introduction to beginner swim strokes. Class sizes kept small for personal focus and practice. -
Adult Intermediate Swim
This class is for adults age 18+ who have experience with the water. Lessons will focus on mastering and practicing swim strokes. Class sizes kept small for personal focus and practice. -
Adult Lap Swim
Enjoy a dedicated lane to swim laps at your own pace. No instruction, start and end anytime within the listed lap swim times. This session is for adults age 18+. $39 per session or $7 per day pay at the door. -
Aqua Tots
Aqua Tots (6 months to 3 years): The purpose of the Parent/Child class is to familiarize children with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. This class also provides safety information for parents and teaches them techniques they can use to help orient their children to the water. **One parent is required to be in the water at all times during Aqua Tots and swim diapers are required for children who wear diapers. -
Family Open Swim
Enjoy the Sandburg Pool as a family! We'll have diving toys, kickboards, and other toys for you to use. Thanks to the USA Swimming Foundation Grant, this session is FREE! Please register in advance to help us staff this great event! -
Level 1:Introduction to Water Skills, Age 5+
For the beginner who is comfortable in the water. Swimmers learn basics of swimming: bobbing, going under water, supported front and back floating, supported rolling over from front to back and back to front, supported gliding, supported flutter kick, supported front crawl arms and jumping into the pool. -
Level 2: Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills
Swimmers should already be able to float on front and back and put their head under water. Swimmers will work on: independent front and back floating, independent rolling over from front to back and back to front, independent front and back glides, front crawl arms and kicks, back crawl arms and kicks, retrieving underwater objects, and jumping into water over their head. -
Level 3:Stroke Development
Swimmers should already be comfortable swimming front stroke and swimming on their back. Swimmers will work on: gliding, freestyle with side breathing, backstroke, breast stroke and dolphin kicks, retrieving objects in deeper water, treading water, jumping into deep water and compact dives. -
Level 4:Stroke Improvement
Swimmers should already be able to: swim front and back crawl 25 yards. Swimmers will work on: rotary breathing, freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, scissors kick and sidestroke, whip kick and breaststroke, intro to turning at wall, treading water with modified scissors, and diving in kneeling position. -
Level 5:Stroke Refinement
Swimmers should already be able to: swim freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke 25 yards, scissors kick, whip kick, treading water, and dive. Swimmers will work on: alternate breathing, stride jump, refinement of: freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, dolphin kick and butterfly, open turn on front and back, feet-first surface dive, and treading water. -
Level 6:Swimming & Skill Proficiency
Swimmers should already be able to: swim front and back crawl 50 yards, elementary backstroke 25 yards, breaststroke 25 yards, butterfly 25 yards, sidestroke 10 yards, tread water for 3 minutes, and dive. Swimmers will work on: All six strokes, front and back crawl flip turn, breaststroke turn, breaststroke speed turn and pullout, butterfly turn, sidestroke turn, pike and tuck surface dive, pike and tuck dive from board, tread water for five minutes, and basic water rescue. Please note: Not all pools are deep enough to teach all of the diving segments of all levels – program modifications may be required to meet safety guidelines. -
Lifeguard Training Prep Course
Are you interested in becoming a lifeguard, but not quite sure about your swim skills? The Lifeguard Training Prep classes will help you get comfortable with the water and prepare you for a Lifeguard Certification course. You must be at least 14 years old. Basic swim skills required. Preschool Level 1 (3-5 yrs old)
Pre School Level One (3-5 years old): Preschool Level 1 – Enter and exit water independently, blow bubbles, submerge mouth, nose and eyes, retrieve objects underwater, front glide and recovery, back glide, float and recovery, roll from front to back and back to front, arm and hand treading motions, alternating/simultaneous/combined arm and leg actions on front and back, and safety topics. Exit skills: (performed with assistance) 1. enter water, travel 5 yards, blow bubbles for 3 seconds, and exit water. 2. Glide on front for 2 body lengths, roll to back and float on back for 3 seconds, and recover. -
Preschool Level 2 (3-5 yrs old)
Pre School Level Two (3-5 years old):For children who submerge completely and enjoy it. We will work on floating independently, jumping, submerging and swimming short distances. -
Preschool Level 3 (3-5 yrs old)
Pre School Level Three (3-5 years old) For children who can front and back float unsupported for 5 to 8 seconds. Introduction of rhythmic breathing and paddle stroke. We will work on independent swimming on front and back. -

Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
This course requires participants to complete online learning prior to in-class skills sessions. Please make sure to provide a valid email address when completing registration. The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. The Blended Learning format allows students to work independently on theory through a series of informational videos and tutorials. They then present what skills they learned in a hands-on class. See below for course requirements. Upon completion of this course participants will receive American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years. This certification is FREE for youth ages 15-21 who live in Hennepin County! Other informationA meal or snacks will be provided depending on the length of the training day, please bring appropriate snacks and water. Both in-water and classroom learning will be held each day, please bring appropriate clothing for both learning environments. Prerequisites • Must be 15 years old on or before the final day of the course. First Day Pre-Course Swim On the first day of class, you will be required to complete the pre-requisite swim which consists of: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest: Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed) Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Therefore, if you wear contacts, please plan on bringing your glasses or a case for your contacts. No exceptions Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Course Length • Approximately 7 hours for online learning• Approximately 22-24 hours for in class skills Please note: Course times may vary to include breaks. Certification Requirements• Attend and participate in all class sessions.• Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.• Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.• Pass the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with minimum grades of 80 percent. Red Cross Lifeguard Re-Certification
An abbreviated Lifeguarding course that reviews course content in addition to practice and testing of skills and emergency team response. To participate in the recertification course participants must possess a Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid (current certification or certification expired by no more than 30 days). Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid valid for 2 years. This re-certification is FREE for youth ages 15-21 who live in Hennepin County! Additional course information:A meal or snacks will be provided depending on the length of the training day, please bring appropriate snacks and water.
